Beach School Training

Robin Hood's Bay
Beach School training - so very different, yet so many similarities.

During our training, we met our new friends, got our handouts and portfolios and hit the beach.

Robin Hood's Bay
I was lucky enough to be on the course in Robin Hood's Bay, Yorkshire, an amazingly breathtaking beach, perfect for a beach school setting.

During the two day course, we learnt about a range of topics from tidal forecasts to operating procedures.

The entire training will take me up until December as there will be over 40 hours of self study included.

I will be running two pilot sessions just outside of Tokyo and I will be able to review them for my portfolio.

The paperwork is the time consuming part of both the courses, but the policies, procedures, health & safety elements are the most important, so it is worth this time to prepare.

Forest School Training begins!!

Fires are great for focus...once lit that is!
Finally the journey begins!!
The long awaited dream to get qualified to get kids outside!

Why beach schools?
Why Forest schools?
WHY NOT?!

Think about this, if we stare at a whiteboard / blackboard / a teacher all day long, trying to take notes, trying to listen, trying to see what the weather will be like when we are finished, trying to forget how hungry  you are, how much of that lesson are we really going to learn? How can we remember it when we don't really hear it, see it or feel it? Yes, feel!

Its time to get those senses working. We are only really receptive to things when we know what's going on. And how can that happen sitting at a desk in a classroom with dull lights being told what to do.

Working at a school that follows the Reggio Emilia style of learning, I have gained a great insight into and see the impact of child-led learning. It is a wonderful path for them to follow and is beneficial for teachers and parents alike too.

The concept of Forest schools is similar - the children lead the way with the guidance of their Forest School Leaders and assistants, only the challenge are greater. With no walls, there is no bouncing, not off them anyway. The forest is the classroom and nature will dictate today's lesson.

I have a lot to learn, but I am ready! This blog is my journey through training to become OCN qualified as a
Beach School Practitioner and a Forest School Leader.

For beach school updates and information - I will add more onto this page as and when I progress.
